The traditional olive groves of Baixo Alentejo are a typical non-irrigated Mediterranean agriculture system. The olive is the main produce of these cultures for the production of olive oil. These olive groves are an important habitat for arable plant communities, including several endemic species. These plants are closely adapted to traditional tillage practices, like the cyclical disturbance of soil. During this presentation we will talk about the history and ecology of these plants and the threats they are subjected to due to the undergoing agricultural intensification in this region.
